The Nature Journal Educator’s Forum welcomes guests Rachael Robbins and two of her students as we learn about a special project they did with their class: creating a local ecosystem field guide!
Rachael Robbins is a fifth grade teacher at Bay View Elementary in Burlington, Washington. She uses nature journaling with her students to connect them with the natural world and bring science to life. She lives in Bellingham, Washington.
Last year, Rachael and her students created a field guide about the ecosystem of Skagit County in Washington. In fifth grade, students learn about ecosystems and about the producers, consumers and decomposers within them. Each student then researched at least one producer, consumer and decomposer, creating a page for each organism. They then compiled all of the pages, scanned them, and created a field guide to be shared with the school. Students received their own copy and the class produced a few hard bound copies for classrooms and the library as well.
